WAND News: Fate of Springfield mail distribution center uncertain

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — With Washington in chaos almost constantly in recent weeks, the future of a United State Postal Service distribution center in Springfield remains unclear.

The postal service announced recently a distribution center in Champaign will remain open. However, there has not been any public announcement on the Springfield facility. “These are good middle-class jobs,” Representative Nikki Budzinski told WAND News. “I think this is something we need to keep fighting for in Washington.” Budzinski points to job loss if the Springfield center is cut but also says mail from the Springfield and Decatur area will take longer as it is shipped to a distribution center more than two-hours away in St. Louis.

Budzinski said she is also concerned about Trump administration efforts to eliminate the Postal Service Board of Governors moving supervision over the postal service under the Department of Commerce. She went on to say it may be a move to eventually privatize the service.
